Street Librarian

I either look very, very wise, or very, very sunshine approachable, because at least once a week someone stops me on the street for directions. I call this 'street librarianship'.

Simon Fraser University Library has some sort of roving librarian thing going on, where they roll a laptop on a trolley into a student coffee lounge, and put up a big sign that says "Ask a Librarian!" Wouldn't that be a great job. I don't know if I could answer too many questions, though, with my mouth full of muffins and cafe-au-lait...

Omigosh! I have that trait, too. Even when I was young in my punk-rock days, I would still be the target of families of Japanese tourists or whatever, no matter how outrageous my getup. I'm pretty sure it's not a matter of beaming wisdom, so I think I looked non-threatening no matter how hard I would try.

You were a punk rocker! I always wanted to be a punk rocker. Or at least a back-up singer for a punk rocker. I think the closest I ever got was 'groupie'. And yes, 'perky, approachable groupie'. Sigh. I bet you have good stories?

(Damn that 'Eats, Shoots, and Leaves' book - now every time I use a comma, I have to stare at it. 'groupie'.?
'groupie.'?

I've made the executive decision to use the correct-for-some punctuation where it looks best: outside the parenthesis/quotation mark.

Except in cases of things that I might have to turn in or have published; then I use the awkward American format. (Why do we have to have the *dumb* punctuation rule?!) [interrobang!]

Well, yes--I used to experience guys in pickup trucks yelling at me on the street: "Get a tan!" As well as frat guys trying to lock themselves into the handcuffs displayed (entirely for decoration) on my leather jacket. Sheez! How rude.

I apparently look so knowledgeable that when I got off a train in Manchester, jet lagged, having just arrived from the airport, and having turned left instead of right, meaning I was hopelessly lost, I still had two seperate people ask me for directions! Surprisingly, one ask for a post office, which I had just passed and the other for the train station I had just come from. Did they have telepathy? Did some higher power say "she knows what you want to know"?
